Waiting

At first glance, it was the beautiful colors of this dinghy that caught my attention. I wanted to paint it the moment I saw it so I could play with those color combinations on the canvas.

But as the painting progressed, this little boat started to take on a life of its own. I began to see how it had dutifully served its owner year after year, accumulating dings and scratches on its surface and gaining charm and character in the process.

It’s not a fancy sailboat or a luxurious yacht. It’s a simple little dinghy, tied up to its buoy, waiting for its owner to return like a loyal steed…completely content with fulfilling its humble purpose in the world.

Sometimes the thought of “finding your purpose” and “fulfilling your destiny” become lofty ideals that seem too grand to take on when we’re just trying to live our lives and get by.

It can be tempting to think that only the famous people we hear about, the ones writing inspiring best sellers or building schools in Africa, have found their life’s purpose and are fulfilling their destiny.

But I just don’t think that’s true. The world does not need to know our name for us to fulfill our purpose in life.

Simple acts like cooking a nourishing meal, writing a heart-felt note, or even just smiling at a stranger... when done mindfully and with reverence... can be exactly what the universe had in mind for our purpose today.

Tomorrow each of us might be “pulled” to do something different. And if we act on that feeling each day, before we know it, we will have lived an entire life exactly on purpose.
